Ten leading marine scientists are to form a new advisory panel set up to protect the critically endangered western grey whale. The Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel (WGWAP) has been established by the World Conservation Union, (the IUCN) to provide independent advice to the oil companies operating on the Sakhalin shelf in the Russian Far East, in particular Sakhalin Energy, whose Sakhalin II Project is due to start producing LNG (liquefied natural gas) in 2008.
