Martin the robot is the first and thus far the only intelligent machine employed for library services.
Martin communicates with visitors, reads books and takes various questions from kids.
The “Avatar in the Library - New Technologies in Servicing Readers” is a project sponsored by Sakhalin Energy as part of its ENERGY Social Initiatives Fund activities.
The purpose of the project was to develop reading habits in children and teenagers through innovations and interactive methods.
The project involved tours of the library and the House of Children and Youth, book reviews, competitive game programmes, a quest and many more.
The project's closing event was “Become a Library Member”, an action that was staged on the town's main square and attracted many town residents and guests. It was the first time that Martin the robot acted as an event host and even conducted a quiz on libraries, reading, books and, of course, robots.
According to the event administrator, the project involved nearly 18,000 people, i.e. almost entire population of Okha, which is estimated at about 21,000.
