I Paint Legends—this is the name of the exhibition of paintings by Veronika Osipova, which was recently opened at the UN headquarters in New York. The artist is known far beyond the island region. At the heart of her art are the rich traditions of the Uilta people, which the northern craftswoman embodies in fish skin.
The event was opened by Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations. “The exhibition opens on the first day of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. It is a gift to all forum participants—a great way to begin the event,” he said.
Igor Barinov, head of the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs, stressed that the unique authentic culture of indigenous peoples is an intangible treasure of all mankind. “Opening the I Paint Legends exhibition of paintings by Veronika Osipova today, we are happy to share the culture of Uilta, one of the indigenous peoples of Russia. This exhibition is our contribution to the development of communications and a great opportunity to show the traditional crafts of the indigenous peoples of the Russian Federation to the world!” he added.
“I am a representative of a very small-numbered people—Uilta, which lives on Sakhalin. Since ancient times, my people have actively used fish skin to manufacture clothing and various household items. All I did was go a little further,” Veronika Osipova shared the secrets of her mastery. “In my paintings, I use the skin of almost all kinds of fish that our seas, bays, rivers and lakes are abundant in.”
Natalya Gonchar, Head of Sakhalin Energy Information Support and Media Liaison Subdivision, pointed out that it was symbolic that the exhibition was held in the International Year of Indigenous Languages: “After all, art is a special language that does not require translation and unites all people!”
The exhibition, held as part of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, was organised by the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN, the Russian Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs, and Sakhalin Energy.
