Sustainable Development Principles

Sakhalin Energy LLC pursues a targeted SD Policy. It is based on seven principles of sustainable development:
• respect and support of human rights;
• identification and reduction of economic, environmental, and social risks;
• efficient use of resources, protection of the environment and biodiversity;
• maximum profitability;
• development of strategic partnerships;
• open and honest interaction with stakeholders, with due consideration given to their opinions and interests in the company’s decision-making process;
• provision of benefits to employees, shareholders, contractors, business partners, and the territory where the Company is located.

In its approach, Sakhalin Energy adheres to the principles and provisions of GOST R ISO 26000:2012 Guidance on Social Responsibility. The standard provides the following definition of social responsibility for organisations of any type: “...the responsibility of an organisation for the impact of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behaviour that contributes to sustainable development, including the health and well-being of society; takes into account the expectations of stakeholders; is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behaviour; is integrated throughout the organisation and practised.”

The Company has pursued the Sustainable Development Policy since the beginning of the Sakhalin-2 project. Currently, the Sustainable Development Policy is being implemented by introducing the principles of sustainable development into the Company's business strategy, plans, and processes. In this sense, sustainable development assumes and ensures economic efficiency, environmental safety, social justice, and ethical behaviour through persistent, open, constructive, and planned cooperation and engagement with all stakeholder groups.

UN Sustainable development goals (SDG); Summary


Sustainable Development Goals They are a universal set of goals and objectives approved by the United Nations Member States as a baseline for development in the upcoming decades.


The SDGs were adopted at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2015 as a new global agenda titled “Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

This agenda is comprised of 17 goals that include 169 targets. The newly adopted goals are addressed not only to governments but also to other participants in the Sustainable Development process worldwide, including businesses, society, and individuals.
