Background information

Sakhalin Energy Limited Liability Company is the operator of the Sakhalin-2 project.

The Sakhalin-2 project provides for the development of two fields in the Sea of Okhotsk offshore Sakhalin Island, located in the Russian Far East, under a Production Sharing Agreement.

Oil and associated gas are produced from the Molikpaq and Piltun-Astokhskoye-B platforms.

Molikpaq is Russia's first ice-class offshore production platform

Piltun-Astokhskoye-B is an offshore oil and gas production platform

Gas and gas condensate are produced from the Lunskoye-A platform.

Lunskoye-A is Russia's first ice-class offshore gas production platform

Produced oil and gas are transported by the Trans-Sakhalin pipeline system via the Onshore Processing Facility to the Prigorodnoye Production Complex, which comprises the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant and the Oil Export Terminal. Oil and gas are then loaded onto oil tankers and LNG carriers to be shipped to buyers.

Project infrastructure:
• Three offshore oil and gas production platforms: Piltun-Astokhskoye-A (PA-A/Molikpaq), Piltun-Astokhskoye-B (PA-B), and Lunskoye-A (LUN-A),
an offshore pipeline system,
an onshore pipeline system,
the Onshore Processing Facility,
a booster station,
the Oil Export Terminal,
the Liquefied Natural Gas Plant,
• Gas Transfer Terminals and Gas Delivery Points (to supply gas to consumers within Sakhalin Oblast).

Oil

Under the Sakhalin-2 project, Sakhalin Energy LLC exports Sakhalin Blend oil, which is a blend of oil from the Piltun-Astokhskoye Field and gas condensate from the Lunskoye and Kirinskoye Fields.

In 2022, the share of Sakhalin Blend sold by Sakhalin Energy in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region accounted for about 0.24% of the region's total crude oil consumption.

LNG

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas which has been liquefied by cooling it to −161°C for ease of storage or transport. In 2022, Sakhalin LNG accounted for about 2.9 per cent of global LNG demand and 4.4 per cent of demand in APAC.

Natural Gas

Over the course of the Sakhalin Oblast and Russian Far East gasification programme, approximately 13,674.6 MMcm of natural gas (including 1,210.5 MMcm in 2022) has been transferred from the Sakhalin 2 project to the Russian Party.
