A presentation of The Land of Discovery, a two-volume publication dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the pioneering Sakhalin-2 project, was held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
Representatives of the Sakhalin Oblast Government, the region's cultural and educational institutions, and Sakhalin indigenous minorities gathered at the ‘Russia – My History’ Historical Park to celebrate this significant milestone for the Russian oil and gas industry.
The State Historical Archive of Sakhalin Oblast and the Sakhalin Museum of Local Lore have contributed to the publication. “Our staff spent more than a year compiling historical and scientific information – a demanding and serious undertaking whose importance cannot be overstated. It is very gratifying that Sakhalin Energy is not only involved in the extraction of mineral resources, but is also undoubtedly a flagship in enhancing the cultural landscape and preserving the heritage of our region,” says Yuri Alin, Director of the Regional Museum of Local Lore.
This unique publication presents a panoramic view of historical discoveries and modern achievements, brought together in a single composition. The first volume, Territory of Discovery, tells the story of prominent pioneers who have left their mark on the history of the islands. It introduces readers to the culture of Sakhalin's indigenous ethnic groups and the unique flora and fauna of the island region.
Volume 2 of the book, Time of Discovery, is devoted to the formation of the region's oil and gas industry and the history of the development of Sakhalin-2. A special place in this volume is given to the people who laid the groundwork for the project and played a key role in driving innovation in the industry. Among them was Igor Farkhutdinov, a former governor of the region. His commitment to oil and gas projects in the early stages of development has made Sakhalin Oblast a centre of state-of-the-art hydrocarbon production.
“The successful delivery of such a pivotal project for the region has unlocked the potential of the area and made Igor Farkhutdinov's dream a reality. This is what makes me so sure that the book I am holding in my hands today would have been of particular importance to him. It is not only a monumental work, like the Sakhalin-2 project itself, but also a lovingly written history of our island. It will certainly be of interest to a wide range of readers,' says Maxim Farkhutdinov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Sakhalin Oblast.
The two-volume anniversary sets will be distributed to district libraries throughout Sakhalin Oblast for anyone interested to explore.
