International Educational Campaign Winner Visited the LNG Plant on Sakhalin

The winner of the 2024 Geographical Dictation International Educational Campaign (Dictation) visited Russia's first LNG plant, located on Sakhalin. The campaign was organised by the Russian Geographical Society, an all-Russian non-governmental organisation.

Gazprom annually supports this campaign aimed at cultivating an interest for the country’s heritage. Last year, the Dictation included questions related to the Russian fuel and energy industry; the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project, which includes a natural gas liquefaction plant, plays an important role in its development. Technological innovation, a well-developed infrastructure, highly skilled personnel – over the years of flawless work, the key asset has consistently demonstrated great performance.

A tour of the production area with a view of Prigorodnoye port is one way to appreciate its scale. The port is where LNG is shipped, in adherence with the highest standards, to the Asia-Pacific.

Liquefied natural gas has an undeniable advantage over other energy resources: it is safe and environment-friendly. The properties of this advanced type of fuel were demonstrated to the guest in the plant lab. The visit proceeded to the central control room attended by the operators – the safe and efficient operation of all processes on the asset depend on them.

“I am very impressed by the power of engineering thought and the excellence of human effort. But the most important thing is a sense of connection to people who create a unique feel of unity, pride in their country, its vastness and rich history,” says Alexander Melnikov, the winner of the Dictation, for whom participation in the campaign has become a family tradition.

The educational campaign is considered one of the largest educational initiatives in the field of geography. Last year, scholars, experts, and even geography enthusiasts prepared the questions on the unique featues of Russia – this indicator reached 95% for the first time. The anniversary dictation was written in 119 countries.
