On 10 June, Sakhalin Energy in cooperation with the Sakhalin branch of Glavrybvod released more than a million fry of chum salmon into the Tym River on Sakhalin Island.
"Since the beginning of its activities, Sakhalin Energy has been focused on environmental issues. In our work, we adhere to the highest standards, focus on national goals and strict compliance with environmental legislation” – said Andrey Oleinikov, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Sakhalin Energy. "Today, we completed work focused on restoring biological resources to invest in the future and preserve ecosystem of the Oblast."
Increasing fish volumes also plays an important social and ethnic preserving role in maintaining the identity of the Indigenous Peoples of Sakhalin, for whom fishing is the foundation of their traditional way of life. Growth of salmon population will secure its stable returns to the shores of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.
The release of fry of chum salmon is not just a local initiative, but also the result of the joint work of Glavrybvod and Sakhalin Energy. Restoring aquatic biological resources directly helps the Sakhalin Oblast to achieve the state goal in developing aquaculture in the Far East" – said Galina Rudakova, Head of the Sakhalin branch of the Glavrybvod Federal State Budgetary Institution. "It is important that the business is involved in this activity, works for the future and contributes to the preservation of the environment. The union of the state and industrial leader for a shared goal sets a strong boost to the entire Oblast."
The fry of chum salmon, one of the important commercial species of Pacific salmon, adapt to the new conditions and migrate to their habitats in the Pacific Ocean, where they will feed on the mass for several years. After that, some of them will return to the Tym River for spawning.
For reference:
Tym is one of the richest spawning rivers and the second longest river on Sakhalin. The original Nivkh name "Spawning River" comes fr om the words "Tymy (Dymy)" meaning deep place at the bottom of the river wh ere the fish spawns, and "I" stands for the river.
The Nivkhs are an ancient indigenous small-numbered people of the Far East, historically living on Sakhalin and in the lower reaches of the Amur River. The main livelihoods are fishing (especially for salmon), marine mammal hunting, land hunting, and picking.
Sakhalin Energy LLC is the operator of the Sakhalin-2 project, one of the largest and most technically complex in the global oil and gas industry. Throughout its activities, the Company has focused on environmental protection and is one of the leaders in the field of corporate social responsibility. A key priority of the Company is supporting projects focused on the sustainable development of the Indigenous Peoples of the North.
