Sakhalin Energy leads the EcoMarine index – the first independent international ESG index for assessing the environmental responsibility of global marine users.
In 2026, the pilot project's scope encompasses shipping and oil and gas companies, as well as coastal cities. With a score of 1.52, the Sakhalin-2 project operator ranks first in the offshore sector.
“Sakhalin Energy has reaffirmed its status as the industry frontrunner, underpinned by years of experience in safe offshore hydrocarbon extraction. Operating in the harsh climate of the Sea of Okhotsk, we apply an integrated approach to ecosystem conservation," commented Andrey Oleinikov, First Deputy CEO. "Embedding environmental practices into corporate business processes and driving their development represents the Company's direct contribution to achieving the national environmental goals."
The EcoMarine Index criteria are grounded in a methodology that incorporates independent expert assessments across three domains: environmental management; environmental / marine impact; information disclosure and environmental outreach.
Reinforcing its reputation as a leader in sustainable development and ESG standards, the Sakhalin-2 project operator provides detailed data on its impact on marine and coastal ecosystems.
According to an analytical commentary on the ranking (published by the Green Mission Foundation), “The Company's annually published ESG Non-Financial Report adheres to global best practice and contains data across nearly all the quantitative indicators included by the Index methodology."
In the environmental sphere, Sakhalin Energy implements projects for biodiversity conservation, educational outreach, and corporate volunteering, while actively engaging with local communities.
The overarching goal of the ranking is to enhance the environmental performance of diverse marine user categories through a transparent and universal assessment of their marine conservation efforts.
The Index is due to broaden its geographical coverage in 2027, covering not only Russian but also international waters.
