A new art space, “Melody of Love, History, and Tradition”, opened in the Korsakov District on 25 September. Sakhalin Energy took the initiative of developing the territory.
The ground breaking ceremony for the upcoming mini-park was held last year as part of the Sakhalin Oil and Gas 2024 Far Eastern Energy Forum. The project, executed with the support of the Governor of the Sakhalin Oblast, ties together several aspects Sakhalin residents’ life: culture, tourism and area improvement. The regional government is putting massive effort towards those areas.
“We work hard to keep our islands tidy, developed, and comfortable. This includes both populated places and recreation areas. It is crucial that businesses and key oil and gas companies support us in this. I am confident the new public space will soon become a favourite recreation area for residents and guests of the island. I thank Sakhalin Energy for their social responsibility. It shows that the company values the island and its people, and not just the commerce. We are sure to find success in such close cooperation between the authorities, businesses, and the public!” says Alexey Belik, Chairman of the Sakhalin Oblast Government.
The concept of the new mini-park is based on the fusion of Sakhalin’s natural landscape and its industrial infrastructure. The recreation area is located in the area of the Prigorodnoye production complex, the key facility of the Sakhalin-2 project.
“This new object d'art is a symbol of our succession and respect for the past. On the one hand, it is about passing the vital knowledge and values to future generations to make sure there will be a tomorrow. On the other hand, we intend it to become a centre of cultural attraction in the favourite outing destination of the region's residents and guests. Being in close vicinity of Sakhalin-2 infrastructure will allow visitors to learn more about Russia's first LNG plant,” says Andrey Oleinikov, Deputy CEO of Sakhalin Energy.
The centrepiece of the art space is the 8-meter-tall Father Sakhalin, a collective image of the indigenous residents of the region. Wielding elements, he “performs” a ritual to protect and bring prosperity to the island. In one hand, the patron of Sakhalin holds a fish – a symbol of abundance and wealth, in the other – a tambourine in the shape of the sun. The authors were inspired by the history and mythology of the island, as well as the cultural heritage of Sakhalin ethnic groups.
“The indigenous minorities have managed to retain the uniqueness of their history and intellectual culture, bringing harmony, through time. We are genuinely happy that the creative synergy of this project maintains a connection between the centuries and puts people of the North in focus,“ says Alexey Limanzo, Sakhalin Indigenous Minorities Rights Officer of the Sakhalin Oblast.
